Palangkaraya, here we come!

FINALLY! It’s finally time for the most important – and last – race of the 2023 City Mountainbike season: the UCI Mountain Bike Eliminator World Championships in Palangkaraya, Indonesia!

As we speak, dozens of elite riders and staff members are travelling to Central Kalimantan, from virtually every corner of the world. This Sunday, November 12, a colossal amount of 57 nations will be represented in Palangkaraya. An all-time record for City Mountainbike, and a huge statement from our young eliminator discipline!

Who is who?

48 riders have registered for the men’s UCI World Championships. Amongst them, all big names. Surely the teams from Germany and France contain the big favourites again. Defending champion Titouan Perrin-Ganier for France, backed up by Quentin Schrotzenberger and Lorenzo Serres. And 2021 World Champion Simon Gegenheimer for Germany, with countrymen Felix Klausmann and Nils-Obed Riecker in support. The biggest outsiders? Season’s revelation Sondre Rokke from Norway, and brand-new European champion Ede Molnar from Romania. Among several African participants, Johan Van Zyl from South-Africa is the one that could surprise.

In the women’s race, defending champion Gaia Tormena from Italy is once again the big favourite among the 31 starters, but many other names are on the look-out. Marion Fromberger from Germany had a great 2023 season and managed to win last year’s UCI World Cup round in Palangkaraya, a race that also showed that there’s some huge talent springing from Asia. Ayu Triya Andriana from home country Indonesia managed to take a podium spot last year in Palangkaraya – will she do it again in the UCI World Championships?

The setting

The stage setting for the 2023 UCI Mountain Bike Eliminator World Championships is spectacular, promising for some great battles, as we saw during last year’s UCI World Cup round in Palangkaraya. While some adaptions have been made, the backbone of the track is still the very same: some of the season’s most spectacular obstacles alternated with physical sections, enabling late overtaking manoeuvres. Nail-biting heats are guaranteed!

A new element for the women’s race will be the addition of eighth finals. It’s the first time ever in City Mountainbike’s history that women will race them – another step forward in our growth! The additional round of racing will certainly have an impact on the fatigue of the female participants. Can’t wait to see how that turns out!

Without any doubt, also the tropical weather conditions in Indonesia will be playing a role. Summer temperatures, high humidity and possible rain showers will make racing even tougher for participants that aren’t acclimatised to the Tropics!
